The "Why" Behind EII: Making DEI Tangible

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are essential principles in creating more just and inclusive environments. However, many, including our top leaders, still find these concepts abstract, often struggling to understand the full benefits and how to implement them effectively. 

This is where Encouragement, Inspiration, and Inclusion (EII) come in. EII translates the ideals of DEI into concrete actions that individuals can practice daily. In this article, the first of a ten-article series, we will explore how EII is the “how” behind DEI’s “what” and “why.”

DEI: The What and Why

At the heart of DEI is the commitment to creating environments where diverse perspectives are welcomed, equity is prioritized, and inclusion is an everyday practice.

  • Diversity refers to different perspectives, experiences, and identities.
  • Equity ensures fairness by providing equal access and opportUNITY for all.
  • Inclusion actively makes space for everyone to participate, regardless of background.

While DEI sets the framework for a fair and just society, implementing it can feel difficult. DEI will remain a standard of excellence, and EII will provide the tools needed to bring it to life.

EII: The How

EII is the practical approach that makes DEI tangible. While Encouraging, Inspiring, and Including may seem simple, they are often assumed rather than actively practiced. Here is how each component of EII supports DEI:

  1. Encouragement: Encouragement means lifting others and ensuring everyone feels valued. It is the first step toward inclusion because it shows individuals, especially those from marginalized communities, that their voices matter. For example, offering positive feedback to someone from an underrepresented group encourages them to speak up and participate.
  2. Inspiration: Inspiration elevates everyone by recognizing their potential and encouraging them to pursue it. When leaders inspire their teams, it creates a culture where diverse ideas are nurtured like a sprouting seed. By inspiring people to share their unique perspectives, inclusion becomes a natural outcome.
  3. Inclusion: Inclusion is about ensuring everyone has a voice and a place in the conversation. It is about having diverse representation and making sure all voices are heard and valued. For instance, actively seeking positive input from all team members and considering their ideas in decision-making fosters true inclusion.

By practicing EII, we can make DEI a daily reality in our personal and professional lives.

Real-Life Impact of EII on DEI

To better understand the impact of EII, here are some real-world examples:

  • Overcoming Microaggressions: A team leader notices subtle biases in their workplace. They encourage open dialogue to address these microaggressions, inspire individuals to speak up, and include everyone in the conversation. This helps to foster a more respectful, equitable environment for all
  • Increasing Representation in Tech: A group in a tech company encourages underrepresented individuals to take courses for leadership positions. Inspiring and including diverse voices in leadership creates an environment that promotes equity and representation.
  • Bridging Cultural Divides in Education: A professor encourages students to share their cultural experiences in a diverse classroom, inspiring a more profound sense of commUNITY and inclusion. As a result, students feel valued and empowered to participate more fully.

Harnessing the Power of DEI and EII to Create Impact

DEI and EII are not separate concepts; they are deeply interconnected. 

While DEI outlines what we strive for, EII shows us how to get there. EII provides the tools to make diversity, equity, and inclusion more than just theoretical ideals; it transforms them into actionable behaviors. For example, EII ensures that diverse perspectives are present, actively encouraged, and valued, creating a culture where DEI is lived rather than just written in unfollowed policies.

Understanding Implicit Bias and EII

We all deal with implicit bias—it affects how we interact with others, sometimes without us even realizing it. A bias can be an unconscious attitude or stereotype that shapes how we understand people and make decisions, often without our awareness. But here is the thing: we cannot afford to ignore it. We are looking for action, not excuses.

That is where EII—Encouragement, Inspiration, and Inclusion—comes in. It is not just about talking the talk; it is about walking the walk. Encouragement helps us check ourselves and reflect on our biases. Inspiration pushes us to open our minds and embrace different perspectives. And inclusion? It is about creating space where we can have those tough but necessary conversations, openly and respectfully, so we can grow together. 

Let us take action, not make excuses. EII creates a more inclusive environment for everyone.
