March 1 – The Start of Women’s History Month

Jun 11, 2024

On February 1, we discussed a day of fresh air, every year, as we celebrated freedom for all Americans as National Freedom Day.

On March 1, we start another powerful month celebrating the contributions and achievements of women throughout history and in contemporary society.

March is our time to recognize and honor the vital role that women have played, and continue to play, in shaping our world in all fields, including politics, science, literature, art, business and more.

We must join together and celebrate the accomplishments of women, past and present, and continue to advocate for gender equality and empowerment.

When many of us think of history, we remember some great men such as Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, Henry Ford and others.

How many of us remember that it was Marie Curie that invented radio activity and X-rays that we use around the world today? She was the first woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1903 and she also became the first person to win it twice in 1911! (https://www.biography.com)

I hope we all treasure Rosa Parks as a tremendous leader since she stood up against the majority and refused to give up her seat on the bus for a white passenger. Her bravery, her strength, sparked the world with the bus boycott in Montgomery Alabama. We hear the stories of David vs. Goliath but Rosa stood up against the American Legislature! She truly brought forth the belief of fairness and justice for all.

Does the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution come to mind? How many of us know the names of Elizabeth Cady Stanton or Lucretia Mott or Ida B. Wells or Alice Paul? They were strong leaders, plus many more, that focused on the signing and passage of the 19th Amendment to allow women the right to vote. They led for decades, with tens of thousands of others, as they were required to come together to improve society and promote freedom for all.

The list of dedicated women heroes requires a large number of books with information and facts to share what was accomplished against monumental odds.

Do we remember Ada Lovelace? She was considered to be the first computer programmer in a world that is still dominated by men.

Do we remember Grace Hopper, computer scientist, that was the first woman to earn a PhD in mathematics from Yale University and developed the COBOL programming language. (www.HistoryExtra.com

As we enjoy March, and the beginning of Spring, let us also enjoy the benefits that women have brought to us. They were working as a minority and against tremendous odds but came through and are the foundation of many of our scientific and social inventions that make every day a place of unity for all of us.
